Second Chance's Lucky Velvet

Biography

This gorgeous mare was one of 6 animals we were called out to when their owner passed away. Second Chance received an emergency call from the WA Donkey Society who had been called to pick up two donkeys but what they had found had shocked and horrified them, and they were not in a position to deal with what they had found.

Velvet's hooves were horribly overgrown, making it very painful for her to walk properly. She also was incredibly obese and in great danger of foundering. Velvet also was riddled with worms and had rubbed the top of her tail raw with the scratching. Velvet and her companion Beauty whom we think may possibly be her mother were moved to one of our specialist carers where they were wormed, vaccinated, put on a diet and had their hooves seen to immediately.

Toward the end of her rehabilitation, Velvet became very ill with a condition commonly known as 'fatty liver' which meant that her liver was struggling to process the excess fat that was stored in her system - yet another result of being so badly overweight. Thanks to the dedicated nursing of Donna Colvin and her staff at Serpentine Veterinary Hospital, Velvet pulled through and quickly returned to full health.
