Topaz

Second Chance's Topaz

Biography

Topaz was surrendered to SC to receive emergency round-the-clock care for his fragile condition. A kindly person had found Topaz and purchased him so that she could get him the specialist care he desperately needed. It seems Topaz' former owners lacked the experience and finances necessary to help him and his life hung in the balance so SC gladly took him in and have begun the long, slow process of rehabilitating him.

Topaz came to us with a body score of just 0.5 (a healthy horse out of work should be between 2.5 and 3.5, see www.schrar.org/conditionassessment.pdf for more details) and he also has incredibly bad teeth which no doubt contributed to his lack of condition. Topaz hooves were overgrown and badly flared, he suffered a worm infestation and to top it off the poor fellow had a sinus infection which his body could not fight off on its own.

For the first week of Topaz' care he was fed 300g of dampened chaff every 4 hours round the clock and an endless supply of soaked hay to help keep him hydrated and to get his digestive system working properly again. After the first week, he then was able to have easily chewed food such as speedi-beet and rice-bran very gradually introduced and by week 4, he is now able to have 3 feeds a day (still keeping up with endless hay) safely.

Topaz was too weak to be wormed or have his teeth done and this had to wait until he had put on a little condition and become stronger. He is doing as well as can be expected and 3rd week in had his first trot in the paddock! It will be a long haul for him to come back up to full condition.

A tragic state for a any horse, let alone a sucessful racehorse to fall into. After researching his brands we discovered that Topaz won over $163,000 in his racing career. We have no idea what he did once he left the track.
