Tarj

Second Chance's Tarj

Biography

Tarj was surrendered to Second Chance by his newest owner who wanted the best for the little pony. Tarj came to us very obese, suffering laminitis and with horribly overgrown hooves. His owner had inherited the little fellow when he purchased his property. He noticed that Tarj was becoming increasingly lame but could not even approach the terrified pony and was unable to catch him for a Vet to see him. Explaining that he didn't know how to care for a pony, his owner called us to see if we could help him as he was concerned for his welfare.

Tarj's current condition is alarming but his past gave us an insight to his total fear of humans. As a youngster Tarj was caught and held down by half a dozen men whilst his first owner castrated him themselves. Tarj was sold with the property and the next owners treated him kindly enough but when they too sold up and moved out Tarj was once again sold with the property. This time his new owners had two young sons who spent their weekends terrorising the frightened pony on motorbikes for fun. Finally Tarj came into the ownership of the responsible person who surrendered him to our care.

Due to Tarj's traumatic life, he is expected to be in rehab for quite some time to regain his trust and teach him to be calm when being handled by people. Due to the extent of neglect to his hooves, Tarj had to be trimmed immediately however due to his total fear of humans he will have to be heavily sedated in order to get him comfortable so his physical and mental rehabilitation can begin.
