Ochre

Second Chance's Ochre

Biography

Ochre and his herd lived on a property and pretty much ran wild. We have been informed that originally there was only Ochre and one mare. He bred her, the resulting foal was a filly and when she came of age he bred her also. Very quickly the population of the herd expanded. Ochre had limited handling and the horses also had limited care. We are told that they didn't recieve any veterinary, farrier or dental care in the time they were there and their feeding was inadequate. In fact Ochre has a scar on one leg from an incident with the fence, the injury was left to heal on its own and he was very lucky that it did not become infected.

When his owner moved out of the house, Ochre and the herd were left behind to fend for themselves. The RSPCA were involved and the next door neighbor got most of the horses signed over to her. She was able to rehome the others however nobody wanted Ochre and so he came to us. When he first arrived, Ochre attacked every meal like it was to be his last, had no trust in people and would often barge through or pull away from his handlers to get to food. As he began to learn to trust, he would crowd his handler looking for protection when he was afraid and if very stressed he would rear and then pull back in an attempt to get away from whatever had frightened him.

Ochre, looking so very much healthier and more trusting. This sweet natured gelding is still very unsure of a lot of things however is improving in leaps and bounds and has proven himself to be friendly and willing to please. We hope he will soon find a new home.

Many thanks to Tales of the Trail Western Ranch for their outstanding work with Ochre. Please visit them at www.westernranch.com.au
