Amico

Second Chance's Amico

Biography

Amico (which is Italian for 'friend') was reported to us by a very concerned person after she noticed the gelding hobbling around in great pain. He had fallen down a long ditch in his paddock severely injuring his knees. His owner bandaged him herself however did not call a Vet (a big concern for such a severe injury) so no anti-biotics or painkillers were given. Approximately 10 days later the bandages had still not been changed and were were too tight, restricting bloodflow to his legs.

Our Field Officer was invited to look at the horse by his owner who then left the property and did not return. Our Field Officer notified the RSPCA immediately and the Inspector saw Amico the very next day. The owners were told to get a Vet for Amico or to have him put to sleep so they opted to have him destroyed. Being the long weekend, it is very likely Amico would have had to suffer even longer. However the RSPCA Inspector attending informed our Field Officer he believed that Amico was saveable and it was up to us if we wished to persue it. With the approval of the Committee, our Field Officer convinced his owner to surrender him into care and he was finally given treatment and pain relief, 11 days since the injury occured.

We have since found out that Amico has suffered at the hands of poor ownership for several years. We have been told he was once an eventer, very well educated and that an injury ended his career. He eventually dropped lower and lower down the rungs until he fell into the hands of that last uncaring owner before being surrendered to Second Chance.

Amico has now been cleared for riding after many, many months of extensive care and he has been scanned and Xrayed to ensure he'll remain sound for light riding. He is also beginning to show his rider just how well schooled he is and how happy he is to be back in work!
